Resumo

The universal knowledge about construction processes of popular habitat in African cities is increasingly advanced. There is a great understanding about the social processes and group solidarity that are established among the residents. The link between those processes and the economic issues, namely savings, are also known. But the technological processes that coordinate the informal construction of housing have been neglected. The low importance given to the technological issues of the process of informal housing production is partly due to the precarious and improvised nature of the solutions. In this communication we intend to discuss the technological dimension of production of the popular housing, as a way of constructing a narrative that allows to perceive the critical aspects evolved in its production, as well as to build bases for introducing innovation and improving the popular habitat taking its current situation as the starting point. The main argument of this article is that: The technological production of the popular habitat is something cultural and socially determined. Housing while the tangible artefact results from the correlation of various factors (socioeconomic, cultural, institutional, etc.) whose understanding is the basis for innovation and improvement of the physical condition of houses in suburban neighborhoods, namely Maputo. The methodological approach we will follow for this communication will focus on the history of construction, where we will reconstruct a Grammar of Popular Habitat having as a chronological landmark the present for the future. We took as study basis the neighborhood George Dimitrov, Pilot area of the Kaya Clinica Project (Implementation of a Basic Housing Service System oriented to support the community). The Grammar of the Popular Habitat (GHP) involves: Elements and Systems (building materials, type of architecture, standardization of elements, dimension of elements, binding elements, implementers (people manipulating materials)). Processes (technological, socio-economic, organizational and institutional). Existing and established associations (Promoters / Owners, Executors (Masons) and suppliers.
